International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe
The International Center for the Care and Conservation of Giraffe building is 12 000 SF and will provide an enhanced experience for visitors allowing interaction with the giraffe all around the exhibit in lieu of just a few locations. There will be a pavilion for corporate and special events and a covered plaza that connects the gift shop to the new giraffe building. The new barn will incorporate a variety of natural substrates humidity and temperature zones as well as feeders placed at different heights to challenge the more athletic giraffes. Barn doors will be open throughout the day allowing giraffe to explore their indoor and outdoor space as they choose. A new footbridge to an interactive island where guests can feed giraffe a lower feeding area to interact with young giraffe and garage-style doors that allow guests to feed the giraffe from the new covered guest plaza. With nearly three times more space for giraffe and multiple new giraffe feeding opportunities- both inside and outside the barn there will be lots more opportunities for guests to interact with our iconic herd. Both the international center and the gift show will flood the interior space with natural light with the use of ETFE roofing. This will support plant growth inside the building and allow giraffe to experience the natural light cycles of the moon and sun. This innovative material is not only low maintenance but also energy efficient and durable (hail & fire resistant). This lightweight material is used in sports stadiums airports and zoos in Europe to create visually striking and functional spaces.
